Tuesday Book Blogging

It's Children's Book Week this week! I feel I ought to get a new children's book to celebrate. What do you recommend?

In the meantime, I finished the decidedly un-children's book Judgment of Paris. I'm not sure I would recommend this if you are not interested in the technical aspects of wine, winemaking, or terroir, but I thought it was fascinating, if somewhat dense in detail. I'm sad to report after reading the book that the movie gets it almost entirely wrong. Really shockingly wrong. (California wines place first in the blind taste test in both cases, but that's about it.) Still love Alan Rickman, though.

When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead: Useful Stories from a Persuasive ManI'm currently reading, not a children's book, but the book When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead by Jerry Weintraub. Apparently, the Judi Dench book whetted my appetite for name-dropping celebrity memoirs full of chatty anecdotes. Loving it. Here's a teaser:

I told Betty Grable about this years later, that my career was made possible by her belch--I don't think it thrilled her. She smiled and said, "Well, Jerry, I'm glad I could help."

In the "I probably shouldn't..." file, new parents might appreciate this book. (h/t Design Fetish) A sample verse:

The cats nestle close to their kittens now.
The lambs have laid down with the sheep.
You're cozy and warm in your bed, my dear
Please go the fuck to sleep.

Have a great day!

OMGosh -- too funny! I love that verse!! Wow -- what a children's book! My daughter is all grown up now, so I think she'd really appreciate it, as do I! :)

I haven't read "Judgement for Paris", but I was less than inpressed by the movie. Alan Rickman is one of my favorite actors, though.

Thanks for including links in your post -- I love it when bloggers do that! It makes things so much easy for us readers!!

I can recommend three Young Adult books, all by Judy Dearborn Nill:
The Rise and Fall of Bibi Karstad; Just for Kicks; and Simple Twists of Faith.

If you can find it in English, I recommend Pierre Gripari's Contes de la Rue Broca - Tales of Broca Street. My favorite is "Le gentil petit diable," aka "The well-behaved little devil," in which our hero gets kicked out of hell for refusing to fight with the other students and tries to get into heaven instead.
