Sunday Funnies

If you've been watching the U.S. Open you've seen this ad, like, a billion times. If you're like me, you won't mind seeing it again. Have a nice flight.

Love you.

Trying to put my finger on why I found the 2004 Diet Coke ads so funny, but I find this 2011 Lindt ad so offensive. Perhaps it is because the voyeuristic office workers in the old soda ad had no particular power over the construction workers they admired from afar, while the security staff in the new chocolate ad actually exert their will on the athlete who is trying to catch his plane. I know it's "just an ad," but in the real world I am sure we would call this sexual harassment, and men would be more likely to engage in it than women, and it would not be funny at all.

I know, I know, "feminists have no sense of humor" - but I can't help it, I just don't find this funny.

I do see your point, but I can't help it either, I think this is funny. And strangely enough, I remember finding that Diet Coke ad offensive! I remember thinking it extremely patronizing. Which just goes to show...something about humor, I guess.

Of course, it occurs to me, the Diet Coke would also be offensive if we exchanged the men's and women' roles. It would also be known as a beer ad. Many of which I nevertheless find funny.

Why is the objectification of the other sex such a powerful trope in advertising?

As it happens, my reading group will be talking about ads in a few weeks - if we figure anything out I'll be sure to let you know!
