Teaser Tuesday, June 1

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

I'm working my way slowly through Americans in Paris which was also my teaser last week. It's a slow read for me, not because it's dull, but because a) there's a large cast of characters, all of whom seem either to be related to or having affairs with one another, and I have trouble keeping track and b) there's so much tension I need regular breaks to pace around the house saying, "This is terrible!"

My completely non-random teaser, chosen to demonstrate these two points:

An American named Smitty, who had volunteered to fight in France, found himself working as a broadcaster. At one thirty in the morning on 17 June, as the Germans were bombing Bordeaux, he bellowed over the air to the United States, 'Hear that, America, the God-damned sons of bitches are bombing us now!'
