My mother's response to Project Runway

I got this email from my mom this morning. Used by kind permission.

Well, I browbeat your dad into watching Runway last nite. I had forgotten about it but with your nudge I recalled I liked it. I still like the contestants and love the clothes but CANNOT STAND THE ICKLY PREGNANT WOMAN (DIDN'T LIKE HER WHEN SHE WASN'T PREGNANT) OR THAT GREY HAIRED ANAL GUY WITH LITTLE GLASSES, OR THE POWER, NASTY JUDGES!!!!!. SO THERE. But the rest is really cool and I am really glad Anthony won the magazine cover thingy. I finally watched it with the sound off. That works pretty well. Mom

Sorry Lorin, Laura actually said Tim is a good guy, but I didn't get that from the limited time I watched ( and didn't listen). I'll try again. Laura's mom.

What was it you called him when we were talking on the phone? Some movie villain or other. Quite shocking it was.

I am reliably informed that she referred to him as "Simon Legree." Heavens and saints preserve us from such heresy.

Laura, Laura, Laura ...

While on the one hand I must support your defense of Tim Gunn, on the other hand I must deplore your mis-identification of Simon Legree as a movie villain. Surely, well-read as you always are, you must recognize Legree as a character in "Uncle Tom's Cabin"?

Or perhaps I am inadvertently showing my own ignorance here ... Has this best-selling nineteenth-century novel actually become a movie in the age of film?

Oh, dear. I should have added the clause, "a literary rather than movie villain." Now you will all take me for a total fraud.

Although I have now learned that UTC has been made into a movie several times (because I googled it just now (http://utc.iath.virginia.edu/onstage/films/fihp.html)), the only movie version I actually knew was the Siamese production within the movie musical The King and I. And that is no excuse.

I hang my head in shame.
